  • Using State Soils to Educate
State/representative soil is one of many symbols adopted by citizens to be recognized as an important item to their state. At Clemson University, a set of laboratory exercises, assignments, and exam questions were developed to utilize the state/representative soil that gives college students an opportunity to practice interpretation of soil series descriptions, taxonomic classes, soil forming factors, and soil physical and chemical properties. The Development of the State/Representative Soil Project was inspired by the Smithsonian Soils Exhibit, “Dig It! The Secrets of Soil.” During this exhibition, each state is representing their state soil embedded in a soil monolith. Incorporation of the State/Representative Soil Project into agricultural science education should have a significant impact on the quality of soil science education and training. This project is detailed in the latest issue of the Journal of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Education. read more
